Just behind his back fence he and his friends spent the day scraping away tumbleweeds, cacti and sagebrush, until they had cleared an area suitable for a ball diamond. That evening, in a rousing game of softball, umpired by his father, John began to train himself to run faster. In September the Baker children entered nearby Mark Twain Elementary School. John was in the fifth grade. Unlike Robert, who approached his studies indifferently but still made high marks, John had to struggle for good grades.

Face down in the dirt, gasping for air, he felt his throat and lungs clog with inhaled dust. He began to cough. Panic-stricken he was seized by a terrifying thought. My God . . I've been shot! Summoning all his strength he rolled onto his back and examined his body frantically with both hands. No blood, no wound. Half-blind, pain-wracked, he pulled himself into a sitting position and crawled across the rough ground to a boulder. He leaned against it and sought to control his labored breathing.
