I determined that I needed to learn more about the intelligence sources than Jack had time to teach me during our time on watch together. I devised a three-pronged approach to remedy this problem, one I would use many times in my journey ahead. First, I read everything I could find on the history of operational intelligence (OPINTEL). I’ve always been an avid reader and loved history. I firmly believed you need to learn from the past, incorporate what’s good, and avoid the bad to keep from making the same mistakes over and over.

When we landed, the squadron that we were relieving met us with big grins and beer. To say they were happy to see us is an extreme understatement. The weather that day was typical for Adak—overcast, cold, windy, and snowing. Since I knew I was going to be here for some time, I decided I wasn’t going to buy in to all the negative stuff I had heard and make the most of my time there. In spite of my resolution, I was going to need all of the determination I could muster to deal with the grueling work schedule I was about to take on.

We decided to give them a taste of their own medicine. A group of us girls sat at a table right in the middle of the Officers Club Bar, and every guy who walked by was given a grade of B+ or above based on how handsome they were. We’d hand out their grade and then start hooting 26 CHAPTER 2 and hollering and pounding on the table. Needless to say, we only had to do that for one night, and never during that deployment did we have any further problems with the guys putting down any of the women. The immediate result was that the boorish behavior stopped, but my reputation for dealing with guys in the workplace actually became professionally damaging as I moved up in rank.
