After a few days in enemy territory I was able to witness the depth of changes, the enthusiasm of the Germans for the Fuehrer. Everybody who spoke, spoke of him and of his achievements. The others kept silent. But there was no doubt. He carried the German majority. Four months later, I was recalled to duty. Belgium, alarmed and still neutral, recalled most of its forces under what was called a "reinforced peace status," a euphemism for mobilization employed so as not to offend the Germans. Thus I was soon back in the hospital laboratory, this time as a sergeant with the heavy responsibility of organizing the Belgian army's blood bank.

Hitler's repeated calls for expanding the German military might, for Lebensraum, with no suggestion as to what lands were to be conquered or what was to be done with those already occupying those lands, was simply frightening madness. The man who wrote the first half of his book in jail as a political prisoner in 1922 had, by 1926, risen to political power. His only serious opponents seemed to be the German communists, his strongest collaborators and supporters, the social democrats. In the beginning it was clear to us that he did not have much success in the German north, and it was equally clear that he was making great progress in the south.

To "settle" their differences, the Stressa conference was called in Italy under the auspices of the League of Nations. It was estimated that Germany had at this time already achieved air parity with England, but despite this fact, England still opposed sanctions. " "Words? Are words going to stop a fool? A violent lunatic? " he asked. After this conference, Hitler seemed encouraged to pursue his rearmament and to disregard even more of his previous agreements. Next he moved the rebuilding of the German navy up the agendathis time with the help of Britain!
