Like Hitler, Churchill depended for his appeal on oratory. In conversation they both tended to soliloquize and to dominate their listeners. Both were prone to depression and needed an enemy: Hitler found his in the Jews; Churchill, in Hitler. Yet, whereas Churchill was a saviour of the free world, Hitler was a coldblooded tyrant, the murderer of millions of innocent civilians, the incarnation and byword of evil.

Hitler's failure to gain admission to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, which he later blamed on Jewish influence, was a further severe blow. He spent the next few years as a down-and-out in Vienna hostels, Charisma and Racism 29 earning a meagre livelihood from his paintings, sketches and posters. This existence seems to have resulted less from the lack of prospects than from his broken emotional state after his mother's death.
