When i started to review psychology a part century in the past, it used to be outlined as "the learn of habit and experience." by the point I accomplished my doctorate, presently after the tip of global warfare II, the final phrases have been fading speedily. in a single of my first graduate periods, a direction in statistics, the professor introduced at the first day, "Whatever exists, exists in a few number." We dutifully wrote that into our notes and didn't pause to acknowledge that thereby all that makes existence significant used to be being consigned to oblivion. This bland restructuring-perhaps extra adequately, destruction-of the area was once commonplace of its time, 1940. The impact of a slim scientistic angle was once already spreading through the discovered disciplines. within the subsequent twenty years it should invade and tyrannize the "social sciences," schooling, or even philosophy. to make sure, quantification is a strong instrument, selectively hired, yet too usually it's been made into an executioner's awl to disclaim reality to all that doesn't yield to its procrustean demands.

In the first chapter of the text, these two distinct parts of the definition are divided into separate discussion sections. First, the authors explain the scientific nature of psychology and then proceed to suggest that psychology may be applied to life itself. Given what has been said about knowledge and the organization of knowledge, this division bears a closer look. " Here the division would immediately strike one as strange, and one would be surprised to find this arrangement. This is so, because, in general, we have come to accept as a fact that nature is what science says it is, although even here this fact is itself a philosophical point of view.

And Morgan et al. (1986) express a similar view: From what is done and said, psychologists can and do make inferences about the feelings, attitudes, thoughts, and other mental processes which may be behind behavior. In this way, internal mental events can be studied as they manifest themselves through what people do-their behavior. Thus, it is through behavior that we can actually study and come to understand internal mental processes that would otherwise be hidden from us. (p. 7) The primacy of methodological convenience is again apparent, indicating that psychology studies behavior because of its easy accessibility.

Thus at the very outset, Morgan et al. indicate that the attitude of science is their organizational scheme. Within the context of this attitude, they proceed to present a brief history of psychology, thereby indicating that the attitude adopted even organizes the selection and interpretation of psychology's history. Here is a rather clear example of how the attitude that a discipline adopts is the key to its own self-understanding. Of course, history is always read from a particular perspective, and our point, therefore, is not that the history of psychology as a science is wrong.
