Corps members who staunchly believe that Teach for American failed to adequately train them voice complaints about the practicality of the institute and how unrealistic teaching scenarios are. During the summer, corps members teach an average of one hour a day to a small group of students, which is very different than the realities of teaching large classes for eight straight hours.

They rest in cushy chairs while reading articles about multicultural approaches to teaching or about child development. They meet with mentor teachers to reflect on another day of teaching, how their lesson on Cesar Chavez flopped, or what to do when José won’t stop talking during silent reading. Shuttle buses pick up and drop off corps members at Kinko’s, where the line to copy geography worksheets and math quizzes goes out the door.

The remainder of the institute staff— Corps Member Advisors, Literacy Consultants, and Curriculum Specialists— is hired in the early spring and meets school directors during a weekend conference. School teams plan additional conference phone calls to prepare for the summer. Staff arrives up to a week before corps members descend on the institute. Teacher training involves much more than simply reading instruction and classroom management. Teach For America must create a sensitive corps who understand how issues of race, ethnicity, and socioeconomics impact students’ learning styles and environments.
