MBR technology has become more competitive due to reduced module price with longer warranty, increased energy efficiency and improved design and operation practices (Lesjean et al. 2011). In the past, due to its perceived novelty and the unavailability of extensive reference data needed to support investment decisions, there has been some reluctance to invest in the MBR process in some areas.

Furthermore, membranes are expensive and create a high initial capital investment; there is also a long-term cost for membrane replacement. Though membrane prices have decreased significantly over the past few years due to the continuous research and development efforts to reduce costs, inflation and rising material costs are still likely to influence MBR prices. Therefore, the operational costs of MBRs may be higher than CAS systems. Technical challenges Operationally, membrane fouling and clogging is considered the Achilles’ heel of the MBR technology (Hai & Yamamoto, 2011).
