These were cut somewhat undersized to allow for expansion when I tidied up the edges using a square metal file. Also added to the base plate were some of the tank recovery parts shaved from the Tamiya kit. I also shaved the fuel strap ratchet buckles from the kit drums. These were set aside for attaching to some lead foil straps later on. Some of the KFOR Challengers I’ve seen did not carry the extra fuel tanks, so I decided to leave them empty with just the straps in place. The side armour was the next part of the hull to be detailed.

Instead of trying to cut the curve with an X-Acto, I outlined the shape on the plastic using a pencil and then removed the excess with a drum sander mounted in a Dremel tool. This method can quickly melt the plastic, so I hooked up a sewing machine pedal to my Dremel. This permits the machine to turn slower and not build sufficient heat to melt the styrene. My Dremel tool is a single-speed type; I have read that you should not attempt to hook up a speed controller to a Dremel with the five-speed selection as it can damage the motor.

There’s only two tricky bits to this part – getting the curved corners at the rear, and remembering that the lid has a gentle slope to the rear. I managed to build a complete bin before realizing this! 040in. sheet and used CA to hold it. That way, I could just sand a curved radius without fear of going right through the plastic. The top and bottom edge of the bin was trimmed with styrene rod and the sides detailed with some strips. 020in. rod; again I drilled a small hole in the C bracket and the base for the 45-degree supporting bar.
