An orange pencil is also good for adding a rusty appearance to the tracks. Note the rusty ring around each road wheel. In normal travel, this section of wheel comes in contact with the track, and is polished bright silver. Left for a while, this too rusts. Add wear to the fighting compartment floor by rubbing a finger dipped in lead pencil shavings. This adds a lot of metal sheen to this area. When a vehicle stands for any length of time, the hub seals in the centre of road wheels seems to leak oil and grease.

Gunze paints airbrush beautifully, covering well and not spattering at all. Only basic markings seemed to have been applied to Normandy Marder Is – I’ve seen examples with large three-digit numbers, and some with only balkenkreuz (plain black and white crosses). These were added to the hull sides; at this stage I also painted the tyres with Humbrol Matt Black. The tyres were only roughly painted in, each wheel has a raised lip that would be worn silver as the vehicle moved – I highlighted this feature with 2B pencil – more on that later.

As touched on previously, I like to add a metal shine to my tanks. This imparts an additional lived-in look. Once again, I applied the metal sheen by rubbing the model with a finger that had been dipped in 2B pencil shavings. This effect was concentrated around areas of high wear, the gun and its controls, and the fighting compartment floor. The edges of the hull armour plate also received some attention. One final touch was to add blown hub seals to all the road wheels. Pick any photograph of knocked-out or abandoned World War II vehicles, and there is evidence of the wheel bearings having ‘let go’ and leaked bearing grease onto the road wheel.
