Adam Smith’s writings on the ‘invisible hand’ of the market), when the free-market capitalist system took shape. Critical scholars have criticized this neoliberal ideology of globalization because it equates globalization with capitalism and because neoliberal globalization has produced marked inequalities both between and within countries (Sen, 1999b; UNDERSTANDING GLOBALIZATION 11 Stiglitz, 2002). Despite continued criticism, however, the neoliberal ideology of globalization remains dominant.

Even with varying viewpoints about what globalization is and the various ways in which the term has been used, most scholars would agree that globalization is multidimensional and that it has multiple effects (Robinson, 2007). Recognizing the multifaceted and complex nature of globalization is the key to understanding it more fully. Using only one lens to understand globalization provides only part of the story. Therefore, both Sparke (2013) and Steger (2013) suggest a broader understanding that takes into account the multidimensionality of globalization.

Despite the problematic nature of these terms, it is often useful to distinguish between country type, not to further marginalize countries that are poorer and working through a colonial legacy but, rather, to explore inequities that exist between the countries that dominate the global arena versus those that have a less prominent geopolitical stature. Despite the limitations, for consistency and ease of discussion, I use the terms ‘Global South’ and ‘Global North’ throughout this book to refer to the two major groups of country types.
