The decision to make a systematic distinction between thoughts and actions on the response cards was based on two pilot studies in which the author acted as subject. " However, I found myself unable to follow my own instructions. If the beeper went off while I was walking to work and planning an experiment, what was the event? Was it (a) walking by the Lincoln Avenue dorms, (b) deciding to use a between-subject design in the room schema study, or (c) both?

Subjects were told to cut off the alarm at night and at any time when the signal might be inconvenient or embarrassing. If the alarm did happen to go off at a time that invaded the subjects' privacy, they were instructed to simply record "private" on the card. At the end of the study the subjects were asked to fill out an anonymous questionnaire asking their true feelings about the study and any problems that occurred. The privacy issues was apparently not a major problem. For example, one subject wrote "tell [future subjects] not to be afraid to take the beeper anywhere.

These events were recorded on response cards using the same instructions and the same categories and scales as used for the randomly sampled events. Acquisition The subjects carried random-alarm mechanisms for an average of 17 days. The random-alarm devices were set to sample events at the rate of one event every 2 hours. The experiment was carried out so that Thanksgiving vacation occurred during the middle of the acquisition period. All of the subjects were firstsemester freshmen; so for most of the subjects this vacation was their first return home as college students.
