In an effort to assist the forces on the ground, the battleships’ objective was to bombard the coastal batteries at Cortellazzo near the mouth of the Piave. At 1035, 9–10km off Cortellazzo, the battleships’ 24mm and 15mm guns opened fire. After just a half-hour bombardment most of the Italian guns had been knocked out.
