Project performance has become a significant driver for people’s careers and even for the existence of some internal IT departments. They must bring the organization to a position where it is actually delivering projects on time and within budget and with the quality that is desired by the customer.

The evaluator must be articulate in writing a development plan for the organization and project office, clearly stating explicit steps that need to be taken to achieve higher levels of maturity. And he or she must have a grasp of the business and cultural issues within the organization. Baseline Maturity Assessment Any assessment of a company’s or a department’s processes—not just project management processes, but any processes—must begin with a firm understanding of the organization’s business goals.

Human Resource Management: Are processes in place to make the most effective use of all the people involved in the project—not only team members but sponsors, customers, and other stakeholders? This includes identifying, documenting, and assigning roles and responsibilities as well as developing individual and team competencies to enhance performance. Communications Management: Are processes in place for timely and appropriate management of project information? Determining communication needs, distributing information, establishing reporting mechanisms fall within this knowledge area.
