On November 16 Wien and Budapest, which were stationed in Trieste to serve as guard ships for the port, along with nine torpedo boats and five minesweepers, sailed out of Trieste and headed west. In an effort to assist the forces on the ground, the battleships’ objective was to bombard the coastal batteries at Cortellazzo near the mouth of the Piave.
